Influenza

We encourage individuals in the following groups, who are at increased risk for complications from influenza (the flu) to visit your health care provider to discuss the benefits of influenza vaccination and obtain influenza immunization. The best time to get vaccinated is in October and November. It is still not too late to get a flu shot or the FluMist nasal spray flu vaccine in January or February!

If you are included in one of the groups below for increased risk for complications from the flu and do not have a family doctor, you can access information about "flu shot clinics" by clicking on the "Immunization Sites" link above.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending the flu vaccine to the following people:

  • Adults 50 years of age or older — even if healthy

  • Children 6 months to under 5 years of age — even if healthy. (*Children under 3 years of age and pregnant women are required by law to receive Thimerosal free vaccine. This vaccine does not contain any mercury)

  • Household contacts and people who take care of children under 5 years of age.

  • Pregnant women. (* Pregnant women and children under 3 years of age are required by law to receive Thimerosal free vaccine. This vaccine does not contain any mercury)

  • Adults and children with chronic diseases (heart disease, lung disease, asthma, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, HIV/AIDS or immune system disorders).

  • Residents of nursing homes or long-term care facilities.

  • Children and teenagers (6 months through 18 years of age) who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy and therefore might be at risk for developing Reye syndrome after influenza disease.

  • Groups that can transmit influenza to those in the above groups:
    • Health-care personnel who provide patient care.
    • Household members (including children) and close contacts of persons in all high risk groups as noted above.
  • ANYONE who would like to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza or transmitting influenza to others.
The "FluMist" nasal spray flu vaccine is available for:
  • 2-49 year olds (except pregnant women)

"FluMist" nasal spray flu vaccine is available for people between the ages of 2-49. The vaccine is Thimerosal free (mercury free). For more information about "FluMist", please visit: www.flumist.com

Pneumococcal
Pneumococcal vaccination is important and can be obtained any part of the year. What's more, Medicare (Part B) pays for pneumococcal and influenza immunizations. Please consult your doctor about pneumococcal vaccination.
Tetanus-Diphteria (TD)
TD vaccination is recommended for anyone over 7 years old. Please consult your doctor about TD vaccination.
